In high school I started collecting Tall Bearded Irises. When my friends had girly magazines I had the Schreiner’s Gardens Catalog hidden under my mattress. I would spend hours looking at all the different colored irises and to this day I am still amazed at the array of colors they come in. Did I feel guilty that I wanted all of them? Maybe a little since I was pretty obsessed with collecting things growing up. I have always had a weakness for the dark purples and black flowers.
Once I realized that you could get multiple Irises from one plant by dividing up the rhizomes (the root) I started a little nursery in my backyard. Fascinated by the idea of running a nursery I went to community college for a year and took as many horticulture classes as I could until I decided to be network engineer, then a graphic designer, a webmaster, a photographer… and the list goes one.
Schreiner’s Gardens offers a free mini catalog with tons of deals on iris collections. There is also a lot of great information like, “How to Grow Iris” which gives you the lowdown and everything you need to know to start your own Iris Garden.
